Russian designers looking for inspiration in China

One of the hottest topics at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Moscow last month was the menswear brand ArtemShumov. Buyers and editors are full of praise for the designer's creativity. What many people don't realize is that most of the inspirational sports trend suits are inspired by China. It is also where Shumov is now settled.

Four years ago, the 30-year-old designer moved to Shanghai with the help of a group of college friends. After about a year, he began teaching at the Marangoni Fashion Design Institute Shanghai Campus. Slowly, the culture of the city and its inhabitants began to infiltrate his life and creation. He said: "All the fashion collections I have done before are based on Russian culture. This time, my friends have given me a problem and asked me to make a series based on my current lifestyle, so I think it is time to introduce Chinese elements."

But at the Moscow fashion show in Shumov, the Asian influence is neither conspicuous nor old-fashioned. Instead, they are more in terms of style, asymmetry, and extra-large shapes. Shumov said: "The Chinese actually have a fun attitude towards clothing and know how to match different things." The designer explained that the move to China affected his fashion design and production. Now, about half of his costumes are made in China. He said: "When I first came to China, I didn't understand Chinese. It was more troublesome for Chinese people who didn't speak English to explain my intentions. Now, we know each other well, I can do more complicated clothes.

Shumov said that many customers who buy his clothes at the Gum luxury department store in Moscow's Red Square are Japanese or Korean. His costumes must have subtle Asian elements that appeal to them. He explained that his style is changing, so customers are changing. Shumov believes that he is a designer first, but he also likes the work of his current fashion educators. He said: "I love to be with the students. We have a lot of Chinese students. It feels great to see the students grow up to be designers who can design their own works after two years."
